Hello! Mabuhay! Hola! Oi!
I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Multilingual Learner Education in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I'm a proud Filipina-American and second generation immigrant and I grew up in southeast Alaska. I draw on multiple methodologies and theoretical perspectives to explore questions I have based on my experiences as a multilingual student, educator, woman of color, and daughter of immigrants - I tend to think of myself as a Critical mixed methodologist.
I am the Project Director for Responsive Opportunities for Personalized Educator Systems and Supports, a federally funded "Grow Your Own" project that takes a Community Cultural Wealth (learn more here: Yosso, 2005) approach to develop and support pathways to bilingual certification in multilingual and immigrant communities. You can learn more about ROPESS from this UMass Lowell Press Release!
This page has downloadable links to publications as well as other information about my work. Follow me on Twitter for updates on education, bilingualism, and policy.
I love teaching and my favorite part about being a professor is working with pre- and in- service teachers. Outside of professor life I am also an avid skier and cyclist, a competitive board game player, I grow vegetables from seed, and I dream of being on a home cooks version of Chopped (I would not do well, but I still want to do it). You can follow my professor, outdoor, gardening, and cooking adventures (among other things) on Instagram. I live in the Boston area with my husband and our Maine Coon cat.
Thanks for visiting!
